Business Climate

With a population exceeding 36,000 within a 30-minute drive of the city—and 115,000 in the labor shed area—North Platte and Lincoln County constitute a community on the verge of big things. Our area's location, in the middle of the country, is more insulated from the economic extremes of the east and west coasts. Growth continues here and the atmosphere is optimistic about the future!

Regularly talking to our businesses is the best way to gain an understanding of our local business climate. We regularly participate in the Nebraska Department of Economic Development Nebraska Business Visitation Program. This program uses structured, 30-minute, confidential, person-to-person interviews with area businesses. The results are aggregated, summarized and made available to the public. We are currently working on the 2009 Business, Retention & Expansion Survey. In the meantime, we invite you to review the  2005 BRE Study.

For additional information regarding the current business climate please refer to the:  2013 Economic Development Trend Study

2013 Labor Force and Wage and Benefits Survey

Our 2013 comprehensive Labor Availability Study was conducted by The University of Nebraska - Kearney. This independent study was based on feedback generated from household and local employers surveys. This study quantifies the fact that this region has a high level of underemployment. Our historically low unemployment rate as reported by the Department of Labor, does not reflect a high number of workers working multiple jobs to make ends meet. The survey indicates that there is a large pool of available workers for jobs that have good benefits and a living wage.

Additionally, the University included Wage and Benefit information gathered from area businesses. The results are included in the study.
